Administration: Interim Chairman
Mark Angelos, M.D., FACEP
The department Research efforts continue to grow with a core group of clinical researchers and another group focused on laboratory research. We have defined the research mission of the Department as three fold:
  1. Perform quality external funded research to advance the science which ultimately will benefit our patients;
  2. Cultivate future researchers in the discipline of emergency medicine; and
  3. Provide an environment in which to train residents, fellows and students in research methods.
In support of our research mission we have developed the Strategic Initiatives Grant (SIG) program to Support our Department Research Priorities. The goal of the SIG program is to support department researchers in the following activities:
  1. Obtain external grant funding
  2. Publish high quality research manuscripts
  3. Present research at recognized national research meetings
  4. Train new investigators
  5. Develop research infrastructure in support of research mission
The amount of external funding for research in our department continues to increase. We currently have one research fellow, Dan Zelinski, MD, Ph.D. working with Dr. Angelos in the laboratory. In addition we have 2 Ph.D. graduate students, Steve Yeh, MD, and Sverre Aune, working in the laboratory. During the summer of 2010 we have 7 medical students who obtained Medical School Research scholarships working with department investigators. Each quarter, we also have more than 30 undergraduate student volunteers who work in the ED as research assistants helping to identify and enroll patients for clinical studies. Jeff Caterino, MD oversees this program. Helping to direct our clinical research efforts is Lynn White, Clinical Research Manager. As of June 2010, the core group of researchers in the department is: Mark Angelos, Jeff Caterino, Michael Cudnik, Michael Sayre, , Howie Werman and Dan Zelinski. Carlos Torres, MD, another faculty meeting will be finishing up his PhD in the near future.
