Administration: Interim Chairman
Mark Angelos, M.D., FACEP
The Department of Emergency Medicine is one of the oldest academic departments of Emergency Medicine in the country having attained academic Department status in 1990. Since creation, the Department has been led for 21 years (1981-2011) by a single Chairman, Douglas A. Rund, MD. With Dr. Rund stepping away as Chair, Mark Angelos, MD was appointed as Interim Chair July 1, 2011. The Department currently has 41 faculty and 36 residents. The Department staffs the Main University Hospital Emergency Department (FY11 census 69,874, Medical Director: Mark Moseley, MD) and the University East Hospital Emergency Department (FY11 census 50,751, Medical Director: Mike Dick, MD). The clinical operations also include, Observational Medicine, Hyperbaric Medicine and Wound Care under the direction of Rick Nelson, MD, Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs, Mark Moseley, MD, Medical Director for the Clinical Decision Unit and Sorabh Khandelwal, MD, Medical Director for HBO.

Residency Training Program: A primary focus of The Ohio State Department of Emergency Medicine continues to be the excellence of our well established Emergency Medicine Residency program, dating back to 1982. The 3 year residency program, under the leadership of Dan Martin, MD (1987-2010), current Vice-Chair of Education and Diane Gorgas, MD (2010- present), has grown to 12 residents per year and has received approval to expand to 14 residents per year for 2012. A total of 223 residents have graduated from this program since inception. Our residents continue to have a nearly 100% pass rate on the ABEM qualifying exam and the ABEM oral exam.

Medical Student Education: In recent years, the Department of Emergency Medicine has significantly increased its involvement in the Medical Student curriculum. The Ohio State has a large medical school, with an average of 220 students per class. The Department of Emergency Medicine teaching efforts are led by our faculty member Sorabh Khandelwal, MD, who also serves as the Assistant Dean for Clinical Services in the College of Medicine. Emergency Medicine provides a required course (DOC 1) for all 4th year medical students under the direction of Aaron Bernard, MD. This includes a month long rotation in one of the local Emergency Departments, lectures and clinical skills classes. The Department also offers a 3rd year selective, a longitudinal "Honors Ultrasound" 4th year selective, as well as ultrasound exposure in years 1, 2 and 3. The Department also offers a 4th year elective, Advanced Topics in Emergency Medicine, directed by Nick Kman, MD. Residents offer important teaching to our students as they rotate through our Emergency Departments.

Research: Much of the Department's research efforts have focused on laboratory based research under the direction of Charles Brown, MD (1987-1995) and Mark Angelos, MD (1995-present). In recent years, we have developed a clinical research program primarily due to the efforts of Mike Cudnik, MD and Jeff Caterino, MD. Dr. Caterino received a K23 and Beeson award from the NIH. This is the second NIH training award we have had in the Department. Beginning in 2007, under the direction of Mark Angelos, MD, Vice-Chair for Research, the department has developed a "Strategic Initiatives Program" to provide funding for pilot projects, research personnel and national meeting presentations with the goal to bring in more external research funding. Faculty, fellows and residents have all received Department travel awards to present their research at national meetings. From 2007-2010, external funding increased from $224,682 to $1,490,248. Scholarship, as evidence by number of publications from the department, has also increased during this time with 12 manuscripts published in 2007 and 47 manuscripts in 2010. Michael Sayre, MD, in his role as Chair of the BLS committee at the American Heart Association, was responsible for approximately 18 of these manuscripts in 2010 through his work in developing the American Heart Association 2010 guidelines revision for BLS and ACLS.
