The Department of Emergency Medicine’s commitment to excellence in emergency medicine training includes educating residents in the performance of core and advanced ultrasound exams in the care for our patients. There are many opportunities for the resident to get involved within our curriculum and we believe that all future EM physicians can master this technology with guidance, mentorship and the opportunities to deliberately practice this psychomotor skill.

Our Ultrasound Director, Dr. David Bahner is nationally and internationally recognized as one of the foremost champion of ultrasound education. Dr. Bahner is a member of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) and serves as Vice Chair of the Continuing Medical Education Committee (CME), and Chair of their Membership Committee. Dr. Bahner is the 2012 recipient of the Academy of Emergency Ultrasound Education Award at the annual meeting of the SAEM (Society for Academic Emergency Medicine).

Our Emergency Departments support four ultrasound systems equipped for multiple application imaging. We currently have two Sonosite M-Turbo systems, one Sonosite MicroMaxx and one Zonare Z.one system.

We have developed collaborative relationships with the Departments of Urology, Surgical Critical Care, Pulmonary Critical Care, Anesthesiology, and Sports Medicine and continue to expand the concept of centralizing educational ultrasound resources to promote educational collaboration.

Ultrasound studies performed in the ED are recorded and reviewed by Dr. Bahner and the residents on rotation.

Resident Ultrasound Training: PGY-1

Education in ultrasound begins during the first month of residency with the orientation block. The residents have a 3 hour hands-on sessions providing the basics of ultrasound education. PGY-1 residents rotate in a combined anesthesiology and ultrasound block, where they receive additional lectures, journal clubs training, perform bedside ED ultrasounds and participate in medical student teaching.

Resident Ultrasound Training: Elective

Residents who have a distinct interest can complete a third year elective to log more clinical scans, hone their ultrasound skills, learn the administrative aspects of running a program and expand their teaching repertoire. Motivated residents can qualify to take the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers exam by the completion of their residency if they can log more than 800 exams during residency.
