Assistant Professor
Bema Bonsu, MD, is an Attending Physician in the Emergency Department at Columbus Children’s Hospital and an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. He is a member of the Society for Pediatric Research. His research interests include acute infections and inflammatory conditions, sickle cell disease, and the creation of surveillance tools in the Emergency Department for monitoring emerging infections and acts of bioterrorism.


Mary Jo Bowman, MD

Mary Jo Bowman, MD, is an Attending Physician in the Emergency Department at Columbus Children’s Hospital, Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship Director, and Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics, The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Dr. Bowman received her MD from Medical College of Wisconsin in 1986. Her primary clinical, research and educational activities include head and neck trauma, stings and envenomations.

Daniel M. Cohen, MD
Associate Professor
Daniel M. Cohen, MD, is Associate Director of Emergency Medicine at Columbus Children’s Hospital and Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics, The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Dr. Cohen also serves as Medical Director of the department’s nurse practitioners. His clinical and research interests in emergency medicine include the evaluation and treatment of acute orthopedic injuries ranging from bedside evaluation to imaging and sedation. He is active in the Med 3-4 Program of The Ohio State University College of Medicine, and is Chairman of the Student Review Sub-committee.


Emile El-Shammaa, MD

Emile El-Shammaa, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Dr. El-Shammaa’s research and educational activities include patient care, as well as student and resident education. Dr. El- Shammaa provides clinical expertise in the area of the adult patients. He is boarded in both Adult and Pediatric Emergency Medicine.

Rebecca Hampton, MD
Assistant Professor
Rebecca Hampton, MD is an Attending Physician with Pediatric Emergency Medicine with Columbus Children’s Hospital. Dr. Hampton is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Ambulatory Pediatric Association. Her research interest includes prospective studies into childhood obesity. She is also a faculty preceptor for the "Resident In School Initiative" residency advocacy program at Columbus Children's Hospital.

Angela Harris, MD, is a member of the EM Medical Student Education Committee and in 2005 mentored three 4th-year medical students during their Emergency Medicine rotation. She also has been involved in the Introduction to Clinical Medicine course for the 3rd year medical students for the second year.


Jeffrey Hoffman, MD
Assistant Professor
Jeffrey Hoffman, MD, is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, an Attending Physician in the Emergency Department at Columbus Children’s Hospital, and a Clinical Informatics Specialist in the Information Services Department at Columbus Children’s Hospital. As a member of the Trauma Executive Committee, he has developed and implemented various trauma-related policies and has been involved in emergency medical services, disaster management and trauma education. Dr. Hoffman’s educational interests are also directed toward bedside teaching and didactic lectures to students, residents and fellows. He also lectures at local and regional medical conferences for physicians, nurses and allied health professionals. Most recently, Dr. Hoffman has been working with the Information Services Department to develop and implement a new hospital-wide Electronic Medical Record and to bring other useful technologies to the service of patient care and safety.

Jeremy T. Larson, MD
Assistant Professor
Jeremy T. Larson, MD, is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine and an Attending Physician in the Emergency Department and off-site Urgent Care Centers for Columbus Children’s Hospital. He received his MD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Larson serves as Medical Supervisor to the Emergency Department’s Suture Technician Program. Additional activities include resident and medical student education. He has also done research in the effective use of the air ambulance for pediatric trauma.


Marc S. Leder, MD

Marc S. Leder, MD, is an Attending Physician in the Section of Emergency Medicine at Columbus Children’s Hospital and Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics, The Ohio State University College of Medicine. He is the Medical Director of the ECC (Emergency Communications Center) and Co-Director of the Pediatric Analgesia and Sedation Service (PASS Team). Dr. Leder is a member of the Pediatric Sedation Research Consortium and a member of the Data Management Steering Committee for the Pediatric Sedation Research Consortium. Research and educational activities include emergency medicine, pediatric conscious sedation, rapid sequence intubation, and the recognition, assessment and treatment of dehydration in children.


Ellen M. McManus, MD

Ellen M. McManus, MD, is an Attending Physician in the Emergency Department and Urgent Care Centers at Columbus Children’s Hospital and a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Her primary clinical, research and educational activities include child abuse and emergency medicine. Dr. McManus also is one of the physicians who provide clinical assessments at The Center for Child and Family Advocacy Department.


Leslie Mihalov, MD

Leslie K. Mihalov, MD, is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics, The Ohio State University College of Medicine, Division Chief of Emergency Medicine at Children’s Hospital, Columbus Children’s Hospital. Dr. Mihalov also is Associate Director of the Pediatric Residency Training Program, with a particular interest on curriculum development for changing times in resident education. Dr. Mihalov’s clinical interest is in asthma and airway management. Research interests are in asthma treatment modalities and resident education. Dr. Mihalov is involved in medical education from The Ohio State University College of Medicine Admissions Committee through resident, fellow and faculty development.


James Naprawa, MD

James Naprawa, MD, is Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, and an Attending Physician in the Emergency Department and a Pediatric Sedation Team Physician at Columbus Children’s Hospital. He also works as an inpatient attending on the General Medicine Service. Interests include medical student education, asthma, sickle cell disease and psychiatric emergencies.


Kathryn Nuss, E.

Kathryn E. Nuss, MD, is an Associate Director of Emergency Medicine. She is the Operations Medical Director of the Emergency Department and the Associate Trauma Medical Director at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. She is also the Emergency Medicine Disaster Officer and the Hazmat Medical Director. Dr. Nuss is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Her research and clinical interests include emergency preparedness and pediatric trauma. As the Associate Trauma Medical Director, she is the chairman of the Trauma Executive Board Committee which reviews trauma performance improvement issues as well as policies and procedures. She is active in the Med 3-4 program at The Ohio State University College of Medicine and serves as the Children’s Hospital Director for the Introduction to Clinical Medicine course.


Daniel M. Scherzer, MD

Daniel J. Scherzer, MD, is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, The Ohio State University (OSU) College of Medicine, and an Attending Physician in the Section of Emergency Medicine, the Emergency Department and Urgent Care Centers at Columbus Children’s Hospital. He also is a member of the Pediatric Analgesia and Sedation Service. Dr. Scherzer’s clinical interests include promoting the practice of cost effective and common sense medicine, the reduction of iatrogenic morbidity, critique of clinical pathways and appropriate use of laboratory and radiology resources. Educational interests include direct precepting and experiential teaching of residents and medical students as well as providing lectures and participating in educational seminars for Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellows. Dr. Scherzer’s primary administrative interest is the study of documentation resources to facilitate medical communication, coding utility and risk management. He is a co-coordinator for the Doctor Patient Relationship course for the OSU College of Medicine and has played a significant role in the evolution of this course. He is a preceptor for the ACEP mock oral boards. Dr. Scherzer’s administrative interests include chairing the Scholarship Oversight Committee for one of the Emergency Medicine Fellows, co-coordinating the quarterly Morbidity-Mortality seminar for the Section of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Scherzer’s research interests include a study regarding the early addition of dextrose to IV fluids when treating dehydration, and the use of subhypnotic ketamine as an adjunct to propofol sedation for pediatric MRI.


Betsy L. Schmerler, MD, MHA

Betsy L. Schmerler, MD, MHA, is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, and an Attending Physician in the Emergency Department, Columbus Children’s Hospital. Dr. Schmerler’s research is focused on ADHD and conscious sedation.
