It is an exciting time to learn and practice Emergency Medicine at the Ohio State University. We are a focused team of committed acute care professionals that seek to exceed our patient's expectations, deliver the safest and highest quality care, and deliver that care in a compassionate, personalized way. Our Department has grown and prospered because of our people; and they make an impact in the lives of our patients daily. We are fortunate to work in an environment where students, residents, attendings, and nursing staff work collaboratively toward a shared vision of excellence. In that sense, we are a cohesive team; working to define One Emergency Department, One Medical Center, and One University.
Our Emergency Department is unique in many ways. OSU Medical Center is located in the heart of one of the largest University campuses in the country. We are the sole ED for four academic free standing campus hospitals: University Hospital, the James Cancer Hospital, The Ross Heart Hospital, and the Harding Psychiatric Hospital. As an academic Level 1 Trauma Center, Joint Commission Accredited Stroke Center, ABA Accredited Burn Center, and STEMI referral center, we enjoy a high acuity, high complexity, tertiary care patient population that challenges us on a daily basis. Over the past year, our ED evaluated over 72,000 patients; with over 25% of those patients being admitted to the hospital and many to critical care inpatient settings. That's over 200 patients per day; patients we are privileged to care for and learn from.
Our Department is a national leader in optimizing ED clinical operations, and we rank in the top quartile for academic medical center performance in numerous operational metrics. We utilize a comprehensive ED Information System for patient tracking, computerized order entry, medication management, and discharge instructions. We employ proven operational strategies such as bedside registration, five level ESI triage, triage bypass, triage nursing order sets, and team triage. We have implemented an institution wide ED surge protocol that continuously calculates the NEDOCS, and ties that score to specific interventions across the health system designed to decompress the ED. We also have one of the most comprehensive observation units in the country, with a separate team of observation medicine providers that utilize 30 patient treatment protocols to evaluate over 8% of our total ED volume every month.
We are looking forward to a major expansion and renovation of our Department in the next 5 years as a part of the Medical Center's Project One. When completed, our ED is scheduled to have more than 90 beds, with a new critical care/resuscitation pod, more efficient patient flow, better access for EMS, enhanced imaging capabilities, and personalized care settings and amenities that will be unparalleled. It truly is my privilege to help lead our clinical operations and move us together as a team toward a successful future. We are striving for excellence in all we do here at OSU. If you share that passion, consider joining us.
