I wanted to write something wholesome, winning, witty and memorable, but I just finished my shift, so who are we kidding? At this time of night I’ll settle for legible. I’ve got biographical details: my mother is a homemaker named Kathy and my father is a urologist named Numeriano but monikered “Jun”, short for Junior. Together, they make me a Chinese-German-Irish-Malay-Spanish Buckeye. I’ve got siblings: Dan, Tony and Amy. I’ve got kids named Noah and Tess, and if you see me smiling at 3 in the morning thank them. I’ve got a husband named James who is a writer (he helped me with this), and if you see me with a clean white coat and a packed lunch thank him. I’ve got two cats named Hannah and Benjamin and a dog named Amanda, and if you see me with a furry-looking backpack thank them. I’ve got some slowly dying house plants and some cars that need oil changes and washes.
I was born on August 22, 1971, the day of a coup d’etat in Bolivia. I swear I had nothing to do with it, and I have an alibi; my birth certificate shows I was in Erie, Pennsylvania at the time. I’ve lived in Ohio for most of my life, but just barely, and most of my adult life I’ve spent in Indiana, Arizona and North Carolina. In those places I’ve had stints as a bank teller, ticket broker, mental health social worker, graduate student, teaching assistant, research assistant and occasional rabble rouser. In my spare time, I sleep. When I get more spare time, I imagine myself playing tennis, doing some oil painting, traveling, cooking, gardening and drawing up floor plans for my latest ingenious house design. My future house will have a large screened porch with a fireplace and a ceiling fan.
But really, the most important thing for you to know about me is that I like my olives salty in brine, not oil, I like my sushi with wasabi, I like my chocolate as dark as I can get it, and my chips with a bit of lime.

First of all, I would like to say how excited I am to be a new member of the OSU Emergency Medicine Program! I have wanted to be a doctor since I was a little kid. I have to give my mom credit for this since she recognized my interest in science early on and nurtured that interest by buying me books about medicine and biology even as a child. I loved them and spent a great deal of time reading them growing up here in Columbus. During high school I was actively involved in my school's drama program and still enjoy going to the theater (when time and budget allows!) From high school I went on to college at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio where I majored in zoology and minored in neuroscience and then to Columbia University for medical school. I spent five years at Columbia, using the additional year for full-time research studying the effects of ischemia and reperfusion injury on the brain (and even got eight publications out of it!) Following graduation from medical school I completed a surgical internship at Columbia University Medical Center before re-evaluating my decision to pursure a career in surgery. After a two-year hiatus from medicine spent in finance, I am extremely excited to be back! I can't tell you all how much I missed medicine and how great it is to be back doing what I have always wanted to do.
I am also thrilled to be back in Columbus, despite the fact I'm living with my parents until I sell my apartment! (Attention attendings: anyone wanna buy my apartment in Manhattan?) Having spent eight years away from my family - although nice for a while, I'll admit! - and now returning, has certainly reinforced my appreciation for my parents and others important in my life. My move back has been bittersweet, though, since my fiance, Laura, is still in New York for the time being. She will be moving here next summer and we are getting married in October, 2008.

The story of me…I am originally from Bay Village, OH (a suburb of Cleveland, OH and also the hometown of Dr. Gorgas). I met my now husband, Matt, while I was a freshman in high school. He tells a funny story of how I ran out of the car on our first date. I was nervous because he was an upperclassman, and I didn’t want to give him a kiss! Fast forward to college. I went to Penn State for undergrad (I know…but at least it isn’t Michigan). I loved every minute of my time in Happy Valley, and met some of my favorite people to date. My best friend from college, Jessica Boyer, is actually a second year ER resident in UPMC’s program. Look her up if you ever end up there. Also, during my last year of college my husband I and actually started dating (and yes, I finally gave him a kiss).
Ohio State was a natural choice for medical school as it was near my family and it was a really great program. When residency came around I looked at lot of places, but nothing could compare to the experiences and the people I had already come to love at Ohio State. So, I decided to stay at Ohio State for my residency training.
My husband, Matt, and I celebrated our two year anniversary July 16th. Our only child for now is our dog Grissom. He weighs in at a mere 15 pounds, but his attitude and energy make up for the rest. He is also a “helper” for our house projects, as he often likes to drop his toys into the paint. We bought a house that was up for foreclosure a little over a year ago. We are almost finished with remodeling the first floor! We are aiming for a Labor Day party, so mark your calendars. Since I work 60-80 hours a week, my husband works his day job as a mental health counselor, and then part-time as a carpenter/tile layer/painter/whatever crazy idea Sarah comes up with for a house project job. I honestly really appreciate him, because he takes care of all the extra stuff that I can’t even think about after coming home some days.
Other things I love to do are cooking/baking, traveling (my goal is to see all seven continents), decorating, playing tennis, singing to pop music in the car, spending time with my friends and family, and bargain shopping. I am really glad to be starting my second year, as that means that I survived intern year! I am looking forward to getting to know all the new interns and please, don’t hesitate to ask us questions because we have all been there before.
